MyMBA: Goals and Opportunities
Some Personal News: Tuesday was my last day at EY, and I'm leaving to build my education program, MyMBA, full-time.
Subscribe below to read my thoughts on edtech’s impact to higher education and updates on my journey building MyMBA in public.
I started MyMBA a year ago as a side project to build the online business school I wish existed. I built MyMBA with the goal of capturing the value of an MBA for 1% of the cost by creating and connecting on the internet.
Building MyMBA has been the most rewarding and challenging work I've ever done. It's pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to learn and grow.
Working on MyMBA has never felt like work. I'm energized with every new problem and opportunity the business faces.
Outside of my love for the work, I'm excited for the opportunity to pursue it with all of my energy for three reasons:
MyMBA's future
A broken higher education system in need of alternatives
The potential of online learning
MyMBA's Future
Currently working with our third cohort, I've seen the need for alternative methods of higher education outside of the traditional system. I've seen the value we create, and I'm certain we can continue to increase that value and offer it to more people.
My short-term goals for MyMBA are simple.
Improve the MyMBA experience. I'm constantly iterating and testing new ideas to improve the MyMBA experience for current and future Members. The number one goal is always to work towards building the best business education program on the internet.
Launch additional cohorts. Improving the MyMBA experience will drive future growth. More MyMBA Members lead to a better MyMBA experience for everyone as we continue to grow the community and network.
A Broken Higher Education System
When I started writing online in 2019, my second post was about higher education. I attempted to explain the skyrocketing price of higher education and what I thought would come next (I somehow linked it to dating apps). I couldn't get this issue out of my head, and I still think about it everyday.
Higher education in America is broken. The costs continue to rise and the outcomes remain stagnant. COVID jump-started the disruption of the education system and has allowed alternative institutions on the internet to provide more accessible, high quality solutions.
Online Learning
There's a negative connotation with "online education" from its early days. However, the world has changed since it's origin of recorded lectures and online exams.
It's now possible to learn any topic taught by some of the smartest people in the world with tools like Coursera and YouTube.
It's possible to create credentials outside of the accredited degree system. Online portfolios and proof of learning through writing online are changing how we view a degree in the workplace.
Most importantly, it is possible to build deep connections with others through high-quality video conferencing. This was door that COVID unlocked. Software like Zoom provides the platform to connect people with different backgrounds and experiences from all over the world.
Finally, we can do this at 1% of the cost that current institutions charge. Online learning brings new possibilities to the world of higher education.
I'm excited for the opportunity to build and improve MyMBA to help address problems in higher education with the promise of online learning.
